Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses in Texas
Local SEO is how customers in your city find you on Google instead of your competitor. This checklist covers every signal Google uses to rank service businesses — and what you need to have in place to start showing up.
Section 1: Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the most powerful local SEO asset you have — and it's free. It's what powers the map pack (the top 3 results that appear with a map when someone searches "plumber near me").
- ✓ Claim and verify your GBP listing
- ✓ Business name matches exactly what's on your website and invoices
- ✓ Phone number is local (not a tracking number as the primary)
- ✓ Service areas listed — every city and suburb you cover
- ✓ Primary category is specific (e.g., "Plumber" not "Contractor")
- ✓ Services listed with descriptions and prices where applicable
- ✓ At least 10 photos uploaded — interior, exterior, team, work examples
- ✓ Business hours current and accurate
- ✓ Website URL linked
- ✓ Posts published at least monthly
Section 2: Your Website
Your website is your home base. Google uses it to verify your GBP, understand your services, and rank you for specific search queries.
- ✓ Mobile-responsive design (over 70% of local searches happen on phones)
- ✓ SSL certificate (HTTPS, not HTTP)
- ✓ Phone number prominent on every page — especially on mobile
- ✓ Contact form on at least the homepage and contact page
- ✓ Dedicated page for each core service you offer
- ✓ Dedicated page for each city and suburb you serve
- ✓ Consistent business name, address, and phone number (NAP) across all pages
- ✓ Schema markup — ProfessionalService, FAQPage, Service schemas
- ✓ Page speed under 3 seconds on mobile
- ✓ Google Analytics connected to your own account
- ✓ Google Search Console set up and sitemap submitted
Section 3: City Landing Pages
This is the highest-leverage tactic most service businesses skip. One generic "serving all of Austin" page cannot rank for "AC repair Round Rock" — Google needs a dedicated page for each location.
- ✓ Dedicated page for every city in your service area
- ✓ Each page has a unique title tag mentioning the city and service (e.g., "AC Repair in Round Rock TX | [Company Name]")
- ✓ Each page references nearby landmarks, zip codes, or neighborhoods
- ✓ Each page has a local phone number or click-to-call button
- ✓ Schema markup on each city page referencing the service area
- ✓ Internal links between city pages and service pages
Section 4: Reviews
Reviews are the second most important local ranking factor after proximity. Google rewards businesses with a steady stream of recent, positive reviews.
- ✓ At least 10 Google reviews
- ✓ Average rating of 4.0 or higher
- ✓ Reviews coming in consistently — not all at once from years ago
- ✓ Responding to all reviews — positive and negative
- ✓ A process for asking every satisfied customer for a review immediately after the job
Section 5: Citations & Directories
Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites. They build trust with Google and help you rank.
- ✓ Listed on BBB (Better Business Bureau)
- ✓ Listed on Yelp
- ✓ Listed on Angi (formerly Angie's List)
- ✓ Listed on HomeAdvisor
- ✓ Listed on your local Texas chamber of commerce directory
- ✓ Listed on Apple Maps and Bing Places
- ✓ NAP (name, address, phone) is identical across all listings
